Decatur was founded in 1836 along the high banks of the St. Marys River and was named for American naval hero Stephen Decatur. The city was incorporated in 1853 and became the county seat of Adams County. The 2010 census places the population of Decatur at 9,405 and Adams County at 34,387. If you're new to Decatur, welcome! The North Adams Community Schools
Serving Decatur and Northern Adams County the North Adams Community School system includes:
• Southeast Primary School housing grades PreK, K, and 1st at 901 Everhart Drive
• Northwest Elementary School housing grades 2, 3, and 4 at 1109 Dayton Street
• Bellmont Middle School housing grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 at 1200 North Adams Drive
• Bellmont High School housing grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 at 1000 North Adams Drive
• ACCES Alternative High School at 829 East Monroe Street
Medical Services
Adams Memorial Hospital opened a new facility in 2005. The new hospital offers a host of medical services that are available on a twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week. Services include a state of the art, physician staffed, emergency department and StatCare after hours non-emergency medical services.
Adams Health Network also owns and operates Woodcrest Retirement Community, Evergreen Court Assisted Living Apartments and the Village of Heritage Nursing Facility in Monroeville. Woodcrest offers care ranging from independent living to intermediate nursing care.
