After returning from the service, Paul Zurcher decided to go into business for himself. He saw there was a need for someone to service cars and sell and repair farm tires in the Monroe area. His knowledge at that point was farming (from childhood) and what he had learned while working at a service station. But he “loved to be around people.”
He found a single-bay service station in Monroe that had closed and bor¬rowed $300 from a local bank to buy it. Today Zurcher Tire employs 97 people in Monroe.
Paul, looking ahead, formed a 50/50 partnership with one of Firestone’s territory managers and opened a store in Huntington, IN, in 1963, which was just the beginning. He expanded in 1969 into Fort Wayne. Then, in 1973, he partnered with another gentleman and opened several other store locations in a Princeton, IN based Southern Indiana Tire chain.
In 1998 “Best-One” was created to encompass the stores and build the buying power for all locations. Paul became “The Partner” anyone interested in tire business wanted to have. He is now partnered, in various degrees, with 250 plus Best-One locations.,/p>
Recognizing the importance of community involvement, Paul volunteered as a fireman for many years, helped to get the Lion’s Club started, is still quite active in the church, teaching Sunday school for more than 50 years. Other areas of involvement include co-chair for fund development of Swiss Village (sitting on the board of directors since 1990), serving on the board for Adams Memorial building committed, United Way, and serves on the steering committee for Taylor University.
When Zurcher Tire first started, it barely provided the income for one individual. Now it employs 97 people including an addition of two generations, his two sons, Mark and Larry, and their children, Lindsey Zurcher Beer, Tina Zurcher, and Jon Zurcher.
Zurcher Tire now carries a wide range of consumer, agricultural, and commercial tires. Zurcher Tire also wholesales tires to various cities and states, provides road service to both agricultural and semis, and does various aspects of automotive service out of its 10-bay service department located in Monroe, IN.
Because of Paul’s success in taking a single bay service station to what it is today, he has been inducted into the Tire Dealer Hall of Fame, and was named Modern Tire Dealer’s 2005 dealer of the year.
